Last November Jonathan M. Wainwright was elected President of the Board of Directors of the Friends of Georgica Pond Foundation. He is one of the Foundation’s founders and is eminently qualified to serve as the organization’s new President. Jon has a deep knowledge of Georgica Pond that comes from living on its shoreline for over 75 years. He is an avid outdoorsman and conservationist and is keenly aware of the changes and threats to the pond.
There is a long tradition of conservation in Jon’s family. C.L. Wainwright, Jon’s uncle, and E.J. Matthews donated the land that is now the beloved Sagg Swamp Preserve in Sagaponack. More recently, Jon and his wife, Candace, made a generous gift to Sagg Swamp Preserve to restore a trail and to add a bench in memory of Nancy Kelley, the late Nature Conservancy Chapter Director.
Jon attended the Wainscott School, graduated with honors from Yale College and received his law degree from New York University School of Law. He is senior counsel at Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLC. where he has practiced law for more than 55 years.
Jon’s goal as President is to continue to improve the water quality of Georgica Pond and protect its watershed which comprises more than 4,000 acres of our community. “Using a science based approach and with the support of our local government officials, the Foundation has become a great example of a successful watershed-based program. Because we receive no government financial support, we are dependent on the continued generosity of our local community, for which we are most grateful.”
All of us applaud Jon for his commitment to Georgica Pond and his enthusiasm for serving as our new President.
