For more than a decade, Friends of Georgica Pond have made remarkable progress in protecting and restoring one of our community’s most treasured natural resources. Thanks to the generosity of committed supporters like you, we are seeing encouraging improvements in water quality, fewer harmful algal blooms, and a healthier ecosystem.
But perhaps the greatest risk to Georgica Pond today is that these improvements will lead us to believe the work is done.
The truth is, there is still much work to be done.
While the pond is healthier today than when our work began, serious environmental threats remain—many of them invisible beneath the surface. Nitrogen pollution from decades of agricultural activity and other historical land uses continues to threaten our watershed. Stormwater runoff carries nutrients and contaminants into the pond. Aging septic systems, persistent chemicals such as PFAS, and the growing pressures of climate change present additional challenges that demand our attention.
These threats are not going away. Some have been building for decades, and their full impacts may not be realized for years to come.
The progress we have achieved is real. But it is fragile, and it is not guaranteed to last.
This is why the work of Friends of Georgica Pond is more important than ever.
Over the past eleven years, we have built a science-based program that is making a meaningful difference. Working alongside leading scientists, government agencies, and conservation partners, we are advancing critical stormwater remediation projects, monitoring water quality, encouraging septic system upgrades, promoting responsible land stewardship, and protecting environmentally sensitive lands throughout the watershed.
Yet the challenges ahead are substantial. Protecting Georgica Pond requires more than responding to problems as they arise. It demands the foresight, scientific expertise, and financial resources to identify and address emerging threats before they undermine the progress we have worked so hard to achieve.
We cannot afford to become complacent at the very moment our efforts are demonstrating results.
Your generosity has helped bring us to this important point. Now, we are asking you to help secure the pond’s future.
As we approach the end of the year, I hope you will consider making a contribution to Friends of Georgica Pond—and, if possible, increasing your past support. Your leadership will help ensure that we have the resources to continue our scientific research, advance critical restoration initiatives, and confront the environmental challenges that lie ahead.
Georgica Pond is an extraordinary and irreplaceable part of our community. Its ecological health, natural beauty, and enduring legacy are worth protecting. But its future cannot be taken for granted.
We have spent over a decade making progress. We cannot allow that progress to be lost.
With your continued partnership, we can build on what we have accomplished and ensure that Georgica Pond remains a thriving natural resource for generations to come.
