Dear Friends,
Recent news reports referencing “flesh-eating bacteria” in Georgica Pond have understandably raised concerns within the community. We want to provide important context to ensure the public has accurate, science-based information.
Following the report, we spoke directly with Dr. Christopher Gobler, whose research was cited. He confirmed that the information presented is not new and is based on data collection that began in 2023, when this bacteria was first identified in the pond.
While the terminology used in media coverage may sound alarming, the associated health risk is limited and specific. According to Dr. Gobler, individuals who are immunocompromised or have open wounds should take precautions, particularly during the warmer summer months when such bacteria are more likely to be present. In those cases, avoiding contact with pond water may be advisable.
For the general public, this does not represent a widespread public health threat. Standard water safety practices—such as avoiding water contact with open cuts and rinsing off after exposure—remain appropriate.
We will continue to monitor conditions at Georgica Pond. Our priority is to keep the community informed with clear, accurate, and responsible information.
Sincerely,
Kimberly Quarty
